Parallel Structure / Parallelism

คือ โครงสร้างคู่ขนาน เป็นการเขียนโดยกำหนดให้องค์ประกอบในประโยคภาษาอังกฤษมีไวยากรณ์ไปในทิศทางเดียวกัน มีหน้าที่เดียวกัน เพื่อให้ข้อความในประโยคต่อเนื่อง ทำให้ลีลาในการเขียนนั้นมีความสละสลวย และทำให้ผู้อ่านติดตามเรื่อง และเข้าใจแนวคิดของผู้เขียนได้อย่างชัดเจน

การเขียนโดยใช้โครงสร้างคู่ขนานมักใช้ได้ในระดับคำ คือเป็นคำเดียวโดด ๆ หรือใช้ในระดับกลุ่มคำ วลี อนุประโยค โดยมีคำสันธานดังต่อไปนี้เป็นตัวเชื่อม

not only … but also …

ตัวอย่างประโยคภาษาอังกฤษ

Not Parallel : Jack likes hiking, swimming, and to ride a bicycle.
Parallel : Jack likes hiking, swimming, and riding a bicycle.

ประโยคแรก ไม่ Paralel เพราะ to ride เป็น To infinitive แต่ hiking และ swimming อยู่ในรูป Gerund และในประโยคที่สอง Parallel เพราะทั้งสามคำอยู่ในรูป Gerund ทั้งหมด

Not Parallel: The production manager was asked to write his report quickly, accurately, and in a detailed manner.
Parallel: The production manager was asked to write his report quickly, accurately, and thoroughly.

ประโยคแรก ไม่ Parallel เพราะ in a detailed manner แม้จะถูกต้องทางไวยากรณ์ คือ ทำหน้าที่เป็น Adverb เหมือนกับ quickly และ accurately แต่หน้าตามันไม่คู่ขนานกับทั้งสองคำ แต่ประโยคที่สอง Parallel เพราะทั้งสามคำ อยู่ในรูป Adverb ที่ลงท้ายด้วย ly ทั้งสามคำ

Not Parallel: The teacher said that he was a poor student because he waited until the last minute to study for the exam, completed his lab problems in a careless manner, and his motivation was low.
Parallel: The teacher said that he was a poor student because he waited until the last minute to study for the exam, completed his lab problems in a careless manner, and lacked motivation.

ประโยคแรก ไม่ Parallel เพราะ his motivation was low เป็นประโยค แต่ส่วนอื่น waited และ completed อยู่ในรูปกริยา Past Simple Tense แต่ประโยคที่สอง Parallel เพราะทั้งสามคำอยู่ในรูปกริยา Past Simple Tense ทั้งหมด คือ waited, completed และ lacked
