การใช้ Conjunction (คําสันธาน) คืออะไร เชื่อมประโยคอย่างไร

Conjunctions คือ คําสันธาน จะเป็นตัวที่จะคอยเชื่อมระหว่างคำกับคำ วลีกับวลี หรือประโยคกับประโยคเข้าด้วยกัน เพื่อให้ความหมายสมบูรณ์หรือชัดเจนครบถ้วน

ตัวอย่างประโยคภาษาอังกฤษ

Most children like cookies and milk. (and – conjunction)
The gold is hidden at the beach or by the lakeside. (or – conjunction)
May received a cut in pay because she was late for work.(because – conjunction)

ประเภทของ Conjunctions ในภาษาอังกฤษ

Coordinating ได้แก่ for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so
Subordinating ได้แก่ if, if only, though after, although, in order, as, as if, that, now, unless, as long as, that, until, as though, once, when. because, rather, whenever, than. before, where , even if, since, so, whereas, that, wherever, though, than, that, while
Conjunctive ได้แก่ however, moreover, nevertheless. finally, again, although, etc
Correlative Adverb ได้แก่ both…and, not only…but also, not…but, either…or, neither…nor, whether…or, as…as

คําสันธานในภาษาอังกฤษแบ่งออกเป็น 4 ประเภทดังนี้

1. Coordinating Conjunction
หมายถึงคำสันธานที่ใช้เชื่อมประโยคที่สมบูรณ์ Simple sentence (Main หรือ Independent Clause)ทั้งสองประโยคเข้าด้วยกัน ทำให้กลายเป็นประโยค Compound Sentence มีโครงสร้างดังนี้ Main Clause + Coordinating Conjunction + Main Clause

The football game has been postponed, So we will have to do something else.
(The football game has been postponed – Main Clause, So – Coordinating Conj, We will have to do something else – Main Clause)

2. Subordinating Conjunction
ใช้เชื่อมประโยครอง Subordinate Clause หรือ Dependent Clause เข้ากับประโยคหลัก Main Clause หรือ Independent Clause ให้เป็นประโยคเดียวกัน ทำให้เกิดประโยค Complex Sentence ขึ้น

ตัวอย่างประโยคภาษาอังกฤษ

When spring arrives, the flowers bloom. (When – subordinating conjunction, spring arrives – subordinate clause, the flowers bloom – main clause)

3. Correlative Conjunction
หรือเรียกอีกอย่างว่า สันธานคู่ขนาน เป็นคำเชื่อมที่มาเป็นคู่ ใช้เชื่อมคำหรือวลีที่มีความสำคัญ หรือมีน้ำหนักเท่ากันในประโยคนั้นๆ

May wants not only money but also fame.
จากตัวอย่างประโยคภาษาอังกฤษนั้น จะเห็นได้ชัดว่า เมื่อเราใช้คำเชื่อมประเภท Correlative Conjunction คําที่ตามหลังมันจะต้องเป็นชนิดเดียว ถ้าเป็น noun ก็ต้อง noun ทั้งคู่ ถ้าเป็น verb ก็ต้องเป็น verb ทั้งคู่ เพื่อให้เกิดโครงสร้างคู่ขนาน Parallel structure หรือ Parallelism

4. Conjunctive Adverb คำกริยาวิเศษณ์ที่ใช้เชื่อม Simple Sentence หรือ Independent/Main Clause
เขาด้วยกันเพื่อให้ประโยคเป็น Compound Sentence โดยที่ Conjuctive Adverb ที่ใช้นำมาเชื่อมนั้นเพื่อแสดงจุดประสงค์ เพื่อเสริมความ แสดงความขัดแย้ง แสดงทางเลือกอย่างใดอย่างหนึ่ง แสดงเหตุผล แสดงการยกตัวอย่าง แสดงการเน้น พูดซ้ำความเดิม เพื่ออธิบายให้เข้าใจยิ่งขึ้น แสดงการสรุป แสดงการเปรียบเทียบ แล้วแสดงลำดับเวลา เวลาใช้ต้องใส่เซมิโคลอน semicolon (;) และคอมม่า comma (;) ข้างหลังเสมอ
