1. โครงสร้างการใช้ If / Unless มีหลักการใช้ดังนี้
1.1 ใช้ในกรณีที่มีเหตุการณ์อย่างหนึ่งเกิดขึ้น แล้วจะมีอีกเหตุการณ์หนึ่งเกิดขึ้นเสมอ (ในกรณีนี้ if = when) โดยจะมีโครงสร้างประโยคภาษาอังกฤษดังนี้
If + Simple present tense + Simple present tense
หรือ
Simple present tense + If + Simple present tense

แปลว่า เมื่อคุณทำแก้วหล่น แก้วแตก

1.2 เมื่อกล่าวถึงเหตุการณ์ในอนาคต (Future action) จะใช้โครงสร้างประโยคภาษาอังกฤษดังนี้

1.3 เมื่อกล่าวถึงเหตุการณ์ในปัจจุบัน (Present time) จะใช้โครงสร้างประโยคภาษาอังกฤษดังนี้

แปลว่า ถ้าเขาขยันเขาจะสอบผ่าน
If I had enough money, I would buy a tennis racquet for you.

1.4 เมื่อกล่าวถึงเหตุการณ์ในอดีต (Past time) จะใช้รูปประโยคภาษาอังกฤษในโครงสร้างดังนี้
Subject + would / could / might + have + verb 3 + if + Subject + had + verb 3

1.5 เมื่อพูดถึงสถานการณ์ที่ไม่มีทางเป็นไปได้ จะใช้โครงสร้างประโยคภาษาอังกฤษดังนี้

1.6 ในกรณีที่ If-clause มีคำว่า were / should / had สามารถนำมาใช้แบบ if ได้เลย เช่น
If you should listen properly, you will understand.
เหมือนกับ Should you listen properly, you will understand.
แปลว่า ถ้าหากคุณฟังดีๆ คุณจะเข้าใจ
If I had known him before, I would not have talked to him.
เหมือนกับ Had I known him before, I would not have talked to him.
แปลว่า ถ้าฉันรู้จักเขามาก่อน ฉันจะไม่คุยกับเขา
1.7 การใช้ unless ในภาษาอังกฤษ มีวิธีการใช้เหมือน if แต่ความหมายต่างกัน โดยที่คำว่า unless จะมีความหมายเท่ากับ if … not ดังตัวอย่างประโยคภาษาอังกฤษต่อไปนี้

เหมือนกับ Unless you go away at once, I will send for the police.
แปลว่า ถ้าหากคุณไม่ไปให้พ้นฉันจะเรียก(ส่ง)ตำรวจ
You will miss the bus, if you don’t hurry.
เหมือนกับ You will miss the bus unless you hurry.
แปลว่า ถ้าคุณไม่รีบคุณจะไม่ทันรถประจำทาง (รถเมล์)
2. การใช้โครงสร้าง Whether … or not
มีหลักการใช้เหมือนกับ if เช่น
Peter will eat bananas whether he goes home or not.
แปลว่า ปีเตอร์จะกินกล้วยไม่ว่าเขาจะกลับบ้านหรือไม่ก็ตาม
Whether Peter had gone home or not, he would have eaten bananas.
แปลว่า ไม่ว่าปีเตอร์จะไปบ้านหรือไม่ก็ตาม เขาจะกินกล้วย
ข้อควรรู้สำหรับผู้เรียนภาษาอังกฤษ
มีการใช้ Whether … or ในประโยคภาษาอังกฤษที่มีตัวเลือกตั้งแต่ 2 ตัวขึ้นไป เช่น
He cannot decide whether to go abroad or stay at home.
แปลว่า เขาตัดสินใจไม่ถูกว่าจะไปต่างประเทศหรืออยู่บ้านดี
3. การใช้ or else / otherwise
สำหรับการใช้ or else และ otherwise ในภาษาอังกฤษ จะมีความหมายเช่นเดียวกันกับ if … not

เหมือนกับ We must hurry or else we will be late.

If you don’t do as your mother says, she will punish you.
